1. Sort before you store
Work out what you are actually keeping.
Plenty of people skip this and move the clutter straight into storage. That delays the decision and costs more every month, because a bigger unit means a bigger bill for the same problem you had at home.
Grab a pen and paper. Make four columns: sell, donate, tip, keep.
Go through each room and put every surplus item into one of the four. If you live with family, run the list past them before anything leaves the house. Sell, donate or tip what you can, then gather everything from the keep column into one room.
Now you can see it. That pile tells you what size unit you need, and it is nearly always smaller than the one you had in mind.
2. Look into the storage company, not just the price
Once you know roughly how much space you need, find a company worth trusting with your belongings.
Start with the reviews. Previous customers will tell you whether the service matched the promise, whether staff helped them pick a sensible size, and whether they would use the company again. Look for people who have stored for months rather than days. Long-term customers are the ones who know what the service is really like.
Then read the website properly. Check what storage options are offered, what sizes are available, and how the site is protected.

4. Consider how close it is
Proximity matters more than people expect.

This helps most during a staggered move. Store the surplus now, then collect items in stages as you settle into the new place and work out where everything goes.
5. Look for value, not the lowest quote
The cheapest unit is rarely the best decision. Cut the price far enough and something has been cut with it, usually security, access or the condition of the building.
Look instead for the quote that gives you the most for your money. Dry, secure, well-managed space you can reach easily is worth a few pounds more a month than a bargain unit you worry about.
Ask the company to talk you through what is included before you commit. Access hours, insurance, security, whether you can change unit size later. A good storage company will answer all of it without hesitating.
