The Wirral is a large residential and industrial area in the North West of England, a peninsula overlooking the Irish Sea with much of its original architecture intact. Two rivers separate the area – known as both ‘Wirral’ and ‘The Wirral’ – from Liverpool to the North and Wales to the South. Strictly speaking it’s location crosses both Cheshire and Merseyside, with the local accent reflecting this.
Liverpool can be easily reached in the North of the peninsula with the Mersey Tunnel offering a direct route into the city centre.
Historically it was said that the Wirral’s border is just “two arrow falls from Chester City Walls.” Thanks to the M53 it doesn’t take long to drive that distance.
The main towns are Birkenhead, Wallasey and Ellesmere Port. One reason many people visit The Wirral is for the nature spots. Popular tourist attractions include Ness Botanical Gardens, Thurstaston Common and Thor’s Stone, Victorian Pleasure Gardens and RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands. There is much bird watching to be done in the area, and it’s no surprise that the BBC’s bird watching sitcom Watching was filmed in The Wirral.
Wirral is also famous for producing many popular celebrities including Paul O’Grady, Daniel Craig, Ian Botham and Jim Bowen. Both football and rugby are popular in the area, with Tranmere Rovers football club in Birkenhead well-supported, and the Wirral Rugby Club in Clatterbridge.
